Selecting the right medical practitioner

When choosing a medical practitioner to cater to one's ongoing medical needs there are certain things one must take into consideration. These include:

Does the doctor speak your language? With Australia's growing multicultural population a large percentage of people speak a second language and find it easier to communicate with a medical doctor who speaks their language. This allows them to feel comfortable as many of their medical issues may have a cultural context, such as the topic of circumcision for example.

How much experience does the doctor have? This makes a massive difference in how a doctor deals with patients. An experienced doctor knows how to deal with patients, respond to their queries, act as a point of contact who is able to efficiently refer their patient to the right specialists and order suitable medical tests when required. This means that patients can get diagnosed faster so that treatment can begin and have their quality of life restored.

What type of care does one require? Everyone has different care requirements. For instance, young mothers require doctors who know how deal with the medical issues faced during this phase of life such as reproductive health, support during breastfeeding and referrals to pediatricians when required. The elderly have different care requirements as well. For instance, they require medical professionals who understand what type of health risks patients have at this age and how best to deal with these. These include blood pressure and mobility issues. One should choose a doctor who is experienced in treating patients similar to them and knows which specialists can best help their patient at their time of need.

Does the doctor communicate effectively? Communication is pivotal when it comes to selecting the right medical practitioner. One should look for a doctor who communicates effectively, shows compassion and understands one's medical needs. It is best to visit several doctors and make a note of how they communicate. Using this information, it is much easier to select a practitioner who understands ones medical requirements.

Would you be more comfortable with a male or female GP? Many people feel comfortable seeing a doctor of the same gender. Hence, it is important to check whether the medical practice one is planning on visiting has both male and female GPs.

Selecting the right medical practitioner is not an easy task; however, it is essential that one takes their time to pick a GP who they regularly visit.
